About the Service

Buying a commercial vessel or yacht is a major investment. Surface appearance can hide structural wear, machinery issues, deferred maintenance or regulatory gaps that become expensive after delivery. A professional pre-purchase survey gives buyers independent technical information before contracts close—so risks, repair priorities and maintenance budgets are clearer.

Bodursan Marine Services coordinates ship and yacht pre-purchase and survey services throughout Türkiye: arranging experienced marine surveyors, local logistics and technical attendance for buyers, owners, financiers and investors. We work with surveyors, brokers, yards and vessel representatives so inspections run to the client’s objectives.

Our role is coordination. Survey conclusions and professional opinions belong to the appointed surveyor. Bodursan does not replace class/flag certification and does not provide legal, insurance or valuation advice on this page.

Why a pre-purchase survey matters

Independent assessment may identify structural deterioration, corrosion, machinery or electrical faults, navigation/safety deficiencies, deferred maintenance, coating issues and underwater damage—helping buyers negotiate and plan with evidence rather than assumption.

Complete survey coordination

  • Pre-purchase and condition surveys
  • Hull, machinery, electrical and navigation assessments
  • Safety equipment and documentation review support
  • Cargo gear and tank inspection coordination (access permitting)
  • Sea trial logistics
  • Dry-dock and underwater survey coordination
  • Hull thickness measurement arrangements where required
  • Insurance / finance survey logistics
  • Photographic documentation and report delivery support

Ship and yacht pre-purchase scopes

Commercial ships: hull, machinery spaces, cargo systems, deck equipment, bridge, accommodation, safety and electrical installations, propulsion—an independent overview of technical condition for cargo, offshore, tug/workboat and related types.

Yachts: hull/deck, interiors, machinery, electrical and navigation systems, safety equipment, comfort systems and cosmetic condition—so buyers understand both technical and lifestyle maintenance expectations.

Condition surveys provide a time-stamped technical snapshot for owners, banks, insurers, charterers, investors and fleet managers.

Hull, machinery, electrical, navigation and safety

Hull assessment may cover plating, frames, bulkheads, decks, coatings, visible corrosion and prior repairs. Machinery checks often include main/auxiliary engines, generators, pumps, compressors, steering, fuel and cooling systems.

Navigation review may include radar, ECDIS, AIS, GPS, gyro, autopilot, echo sounder, speed log and GMDSS—see also navigation electronic services and electrical & electronic engineering when follow-up attendance is needed.

Electrical and safety reviews may cover switchboards, emergency systems, alarms, lighting, firefighting, lifesaving appliances and escape arrangements—as visible/accessible at the time of survey.

Documentation, planning and logistics

Where available, records may include class/statutory certificates, maintenance and dry-dock history, repair reports and equipment service files. Bodursan coordinates survey scheduling, port or yard access, owner liaison, surveyor attendance, transport and documentation logistics—see Tuzla / Yalova when the vessel is in yard.

Sea trials, dry dock and underwater surveys

Sea trials may observe engine/steering/propulsion behaviour, navigation and generator performance, alarms, communications, manoeuvrability, vibration and noise—complementing static inspections.

In dry dock, surveyors can examine underwater structures: hull, sea chests, rudder, propeller, stern tube area, thrusters, anodes and coatings—often decisive for condition judgment. See dry docking services.

If docking is impractical, underwater surveys via divers (photos/video, propeller/rudder/sea-chest checks) can support due diligence—see divers / underwater cleaning & repairs.

Thickness, cargo gear, tanks and accommodation

Ultrasonic thickness measurements may be arranged for selected plating and members. Cargo gear reviews may cover cranes, hatch covers, hydraulics, winches and related deck machinery. Internal tanks (ballast, voids, cargo, fuel, FW) depend on safe access and gas-free status. Accommodation condition often reflects overall maintenance culture.

Insurance, finance, flag/class and due diligence

We can coordinate logistics for surveys requested by insurers or lenders. Acceptance of any report remains with that organisation. Flag/class attendance logistics can be supported where the project requires it—certificates still issue from the competent bodies.

Technical due diligence combines inspection findings, documents and operational observations: structure, machinery, electrics, navigation, safety, history, visible defects and readiness. Risk themes may include deferred maintenance, corrosion trends, ageing equipment, missing papers and safety gaps. Survey findings inform—but do not replace—buyer valuation and commercial negotiation.

Reporting

Clients typically receive a structured surveyor report: summary, observations, photos, equipment notes, deficiencies and recommended follow-ups. Bodursan helps the logistics of attendance and delivery; report content is the surveyor’s professional product.

Vessel types

Coordination covers container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, gas carriers, OSVs, tugs/workboats, yachts/superyachts and related assets—scope tailored to design and intended use.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pre-purchase marine survey?

An independent technical inspection before purchase to understand physical condition, maintenance status and likely repair priorities.

Does Bodursan perform the survey itself?

We coordinate logistics and attendance with appointed marine surveyors. Professional survey opinions belong to the surveyor.

Can you arrange yacht surveys, sea trials and underwater checks?

Yes—yacht/motor/sail/superyacht logistics as scoped; sea trials where appropriate; underwater inspections via divers or dry dock depending on status.

Can surveys identify all hidden defects?

No survey sees everything. Visible and reasonably accessible defects are the focus; some issues appear only after opening-up, repair or further operation.

Do banks or insurers accept these reports?

Many request condition surveys, but acceptance depends on each institution’s own criteria—never guaranteed by the agency.

Which documents are usually reviewed?

Where available: class/statutory certificates, dry-dock and maintenance history, service reports and equipment documentation.

What happens after the survey?

The client receives the surveyor’s structured report for use in negotiation, financing discussions and maintenance planning.
